Roofing Industry – Traumatic Brain Injury
In the roofing industry, workers frequently climb to high heights and use heavy tools. This puts them at an increased risk of traumatic brain injuries, a type of serious—and often fatal—head injury.
A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, occurs when someone receives a sudden and violent blow or hit to the head. In the roofing industry, a TBI might occur if someone falls from a roof or scaffolding, or if they are hit by a piece of dropped equipment or falling debris. When someone in the roofing industry suffers from a TBI, they may experience immediate symptoms, including:
- Loss of consciousness
- Problems with speech, balance, or coordination
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Mental changes, including confusion
Some types of TBIs, like concussions, can be treated with rest and time. Others can be more severe and lead to permanent damage and changes, like changes behavior, mental issues like depression or anxiety, persistent and severe headaches, and seizures. In very severe cases, a TBI can lead to a coma or death.
